WIS 153 Improvements Scheduled in Mosinee

Governor Jim Doyle recently signed a $1.9 million contract to construct a roundabout at the north intersection of WIS 153 and Old 51 in Marathon County. Construction is scheduled to begin on June 23, 2010. S & N Incorporated is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will replace the current north intersection of WIS 153 and Old 51 with a roundabout. Other improvements include lighting, landscaping and a multi-use recreational trail. During construction, WIS 153 will remain open. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures, flagging operations and possible delays. Ranger Street (between the intersection under construction and Edison Street), Old 51 north (between the intersection under construction and Edison Street) and the intersection of Depot Street, River Road and Old 51 will be closed for the majority of the project. Business and residential access will remain open at all times during construction. An alternate truck route will be available on I-39, WIS 34, Marathon County C, Marathon County O and WIS 153. Construction is scheduled for completion by November 2010.

Roundabout Project Details

In 2010, the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be improving the intersection of State Hwy 153 (Main Street) and Old Hwy 51 in Mosinee. The intersection improvement project will include the construction of a Modern Roundabout which will eliminate the four-way stop sign traffic controls that are presently located at this major intersection. According to the WisDOT, there are approximately 16,000 vehicles which travel through this intersection each day.

The highway project will also include the reconstruction of the intersection of North Old Highway 51 and Depot Street. After the Depot Street intersection reconstruction work is completed, Depot Street then will serve as the new main entrance to the Wausau Paper Corporation mill and the existing State Highway 153 entrance to the paper mill will be closed to safely accommodate the new roundabout intersection. See diagram below for the proposed State Hwy 153 roundabout in Mosinee.

According to the WisDOT website, modern roundabouts are the newest form of intersection in the U.S. Several can be found in Wisconsin, including a new urban roundabout on Milwaukee's south side. Several others are in the planning stages around the state.

Roundabouts provide safe and efficient traffic flow and make use of extensive safety and traffic research conducted over the past 25 years in other countries. Today's roundabouts are much smaller than the "traffic circles" of earlier years.

Roundabouts move traffic safely through an intersection because of:

  • Slower speeds
  • Fewer conflict points
  • Easier decision-making

Studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show that roundabouts provide a:

  • 90% reduction in fatal crashes
  • 76% reduction in injury crashes
  • 30-40% reduction in pedestrian crashes
  • 10% reduction in bicycle crashes
